My research is pretty tame, so we don’t have any real issues that we need to account for outside of giving debriefs and not lying to participants. I did an experiment 6 years ago with some special equipment which uses an electromagnet to shut down a part of the brain for a small amount of time. That was probably the most difficult study to get ethical approval for as we needed to be extremely careful with everything we were doing, we all needed training, and had to plan things out in the event that something bad happens.

Nothing bad ever happened, and everyone was completely fine after 25 minutes so fortunately we had no problems!

For my PhD, I was going to study the effect of alcohol on people’s attention to cigarettes. In addition to the ethics of giving people alcohol, I wanted to try and blind people to what condition they were in so they have fewer expectations. One time they drank vodka and tonic and another time they drank just tonic water. The idea was tonic water is quite a strong flavour, so it would fool people a little. However, someone who reviewed the ethics spotted I did not warn the participants about something called quinine in tonic water which people can be allergic to. So, I had to warn people not to take part if they knew they were allergic to quinine.

The assessment of capacity to consent with children and adults, who have an intellectual disability.

It is essential that we ensure that each of our participants understands the study aims/procedures to the best of their abilities and is also given the opportunity to provide informed consent/assent. Sometimes this process can be very tricky if someone struggles to understand certain concepts and we have the responsibility to find every possible way to explain these concepts to them in the most accessible form possible (e.g., videos, images, gestures).
