About Me:
I live in Cardiff with my partner, and lots of houseplants! πΏπ‘ I am a PhD student researching psychological in genetic skin conditions, and I teach University Year 1 Psychology students. π©βπ»Β I have a new godson (in the form of a puppy) called Archie, and we spend lots of time in the park with him. πΆπ³ In the evenings I love going for walks by the sea, baking, or playing rugby. π π

I moved to Cardiff as an undergraduate student, and fell in love with the city so I’ve never left! Alongside my PhD and teaching, I also volunteer at my local church, within widening engagement programmes, and with relevant charities. I play for a local rugby team, and enjoy spending time with my teammates outside of training, and at the gym.

My Work:
My research aims to understand the physical, emotional and mental health issues associated with genetic skin conditions. Through this work, we hope to advise healthcare staff on how best to support those diagnosed with these conditions, through intervention and support programme development.

My work is orientated within the Behavioural Genetics Group at Cardiff University, and branches the fields of genetics, psychology, medicine and dermatology. The majority of our work is focused on the rare genetic skin disorder called X-linked ichthyosis (XLI), where there is little research or understanding of the condition. XLI is caused by a mutation or deletion in a specific gene, resulting in a range of symptoms including flaky skin, eye problems and a decreased ability to sweat. Our recent work has revealed that people with XLI are also more likely to develop mood and neurodevelopmental disorders such as depression, anxiety or autism spectrum disorder. We are also exploring the impact of this gene mutation/deletion on abnormal heart rhythms, and attitudes towards potential heart screening services.
Although our research is complex and spans a number of topics and disciplines, we hope that this work will help other scientists and psychologists to develop support programmes and interventions to improve the wellbeing of people living with XLI.

My Typical Day:
Depending on any deadlines, meetings or teaching sessions, I either work from home or I take a short walk into my office which I share with other PhD students. After work, I try to go to the gym or to rugby training, or sometimes for a walk on the beach!

My typical day is largely dependent on the number of meetings I have, any teaching sessions and sometimes even the weather as I usually walk 20 minutes to work! Sometimes I work from home, and sometimes I work in a joint office with other PhD students. I try to prepare all my meals in advance as my days can be quite hectic, and I normally try to find time to go to the gym, for a swim or to rugby training after work. As a PhD is not set hours, I try to work from 9-5, but this is also dependent on any deadlines or urgent work. I normally avoid working at weekends to try to establish an important work-life balance.
If I have lots of teaching to do, a normal working day for me might involve answering emails or queries from students, preparing for teaching sessions or marking essays. If I am focused on my PhD research, I will often spend the morning analysing new data, meeting with my supervisor to discuss our plans, or writing for any work we are trying to publish. I also serve on lots of different committees and groups, so I tend to spend a few hours a week in meetings, approving documents or organising events. Some of my other commitments include tutoring GCSE & A-Level students, reviewing other people’s research, and preparing presentations for conferences or events.

What I'd do with the prize money:
If I won this prize money, I would like to set up a Psychology-careers based mentoring scheme to engage more students, with a particular focus on marginalized groups such as BIPOC, first-generation and disabled students. STEM careers can appear exclusive to many potential students, particularly in the elitist, predominantly White British nature of Higher Education (HE) in the UK. To adequately and effectively support learners from all types of backgrounds, it is imperative that we thrive for equality in access to HE, to dismantle the substantial barriers some students face when pursuing a Psychology-based career. I would like to support these students by offering free mentoring/tutoring sessions, to guide and support them throughout the HE application process and beyond.

Qualifications:
GCSE’s – all A*-A (apart from a C in Astronomy – a course that I hated!)
A-Levels – BBC (I struggled hugely during this time due to a traumatic life event so I’m very proud to have any qualifications here at all!)
BSc (Hons) Psychology – First Class Degree – I loved my time at Cardiff Met but I never thought I would graduate until I realised my lecturers really beleived in me.
MSc Health Psychology – Distinction – I stayed at Cardiff Met to study for my Masters as I loved the staff and the course structure, and it gave me a whole new understanding of the discipline.
I am currently studying for my PhD in Psychology at Cardiff University, which I’ll hopefully complete in 2o24 (fingers crossed!).

Work History:
Graduate Teaching Assistant – Cardiff University (2020-Present).
GCSE & A-Level Tutor (2016-Present).
STEM Ambassador (STEM Learning) (2020-Present).
Before I started my PhD, I had multiple jobs including barista, sports coach, and student ambassador. Although none of these were specific to my career, they taught me some excellent skills, including time management, communication and teamwork, and problem solving.
